However, if you have scored around 600+, you can consider yourself on the safe side. This year, the average score is 400-550, and a good score is 575- 625 marks.
Here are the cutoff marks of the previous year for top medical colleges:
Marking Scheme and Percentile Formula
- The total score will be out of 720
- The candidate will get (+)4 marks for each correct answer
- (-)1 mark for each wrong answer
- 0 mark if skipped
- Total Marks Scored = 4x (total number of correct questions) – (1 x total number of wrong questions)
Percentile Formula
Percentile in the NEET UG exam shows how many candidates scored higher than you. Let’s say your percentile is 98; this would mean that 100-98 = 2 per cent of the total appeared candidates scored higher than you.
NEET Merit List and Tie-breaking Method
NTA prepares a merit list based on the NEET result for those who have opted for the 15% All India Quota. Then, this list is sorted category-wise at the Directorate General of Health Services.
Then this list goes to state counselling authorities and a merit list for state quota is prepared.

Tie-breaking Rules
Whenever two or more candidates get the same score, NTA uses these rules as tie-breaker:
- The student scoring higher in biology will get a higher rank
- If biology marks are the same, the one who scores high in Chemistry will get a higher rank
- If the tie remains, the one with less number of wrong answers will get a higher rank
- This year, NTA discarded the age-based tie-breaking rule
